The Bishop’s palace of St-Lizier :

It houses the departmental museum of Ariège. Through its varied collections and a modern museum itinerary, it shows the evolution of a territory for over 2000 years.

Spread over four floors, the visit brings together four major themes :

• The Roman presence in Couserans
The interest of learned men from Ariège for the Antique era, gives us a moving collection of Roman daily life items. Incidental findings in St-Girons, in 1994, added a coin treasure to the collection.

• From a Gallo-Roman City to a Couserans Bishop’s see
At the end of the Antique era, traumatism, related to important invasions, has modified the society and so the City’s architecture was permanently marked by the arrival of Christianity. How do the St-Lizier inhabitants settle in Middle-Ages life?

• The Bishop’s palace, its history and architecture
From the XIth to the XIIIth century, the Bishops affirm their power through all sorts of sumptuous architectural projects. In this space of exceptional pictorial wealth, the secrets of both the palace and the cathedral will be unveiled to you.

• Living in a Pyrenean Valley in the early XXth century
Who are the inhabitants of the Bethmale Valley? Shepards, artisans, farmers… Jacques Begouën, a Couserans lover, collected numerous authentic objects that allow us to discover all about these people.
Audio space : Hear the legends of the Pyrenees!

The cathedral of Notre Dame de la Sède :

Incidental findings of XVth century paintings have been at the origin of recent restoration works at the cathedral. At this occasion, a unique set of monumental paintings, ornamenting the vaults and walls of the building, were brought to light. Nowadays, one can admire representations of Sibyls and Patriarchs, a tree of Jesse as well as episodes of the life of St-James.

Made of ochers, charcoal and lime, the paintings offer a unity of composition and a harmony of colours which makes a gay and peaceful atmosphere emanate from them.
Often qualified as “the little Sixtine chapel”, Notre Dame de la Sède is, from now on, counted amongst the most beautiful religious buildings in the Midi-Pyrénées.

The museum is a privileged site where one can discover both cultural and industrial heritage of what stays a lively economical activity in the Couserans: the paper production.

In 2007, the site was listed as a historical monument.

The museum retraces the journey from St-Girons to Sort, in Spain, of those who refused Nazie oppression and it honours the memory of peddlers and escaping people during World War II. This both cultural and heritage space reminds us of a dark chapter in history and values for the epic of all those who gave their lives and fought for the freedom of our country.
