col de rose ariegeRoad access : From Saint-Girons, take the D618 road in the direction of Massat. From Massat, follow the D18 in the direction of Etang de Lers (lake), crossing the Le Port Village. After 12 km (about 1 km before the lake), before arriving at the bridge that crosses the Lamarda Creek, park on the right side of the road (small parking space) facing the hiking indication panel. GPS 42.816841, 1.389790

Itinaray detail :

Start from the indication panel taking the large ascending path. 15 mn.
Above the second bend, you’ll arrive at Courtal de Lamarda (1302 m) : summer pastures provided with former shepherd’s huts (orris) built with dry stones (granite) and covered with green roofs (girbage : a mixture of grass and heather). The huts are provided with cellars for stocking milk products (mazuc).
Continue following the climbing and winding path.
Arrival at the Cabane de Rose (hut) (1550 m, 2h15).
Panoramic view over Mount Ceint and Pic de Girantès (2088 m), the former territory of the shepherd Jean-Marie Claustre. The North reveals the pointed summit of Mount Béas (1903 m). Following the ridge line on the right, behind the Dret Pass, the Mount Valier with its Arcouzan Glacier shows itself.

raquette bethmaleAccess : From St-Girons, take the D618 road in the direction of the "Col de Portet d'Aspet". Go to Castillon and then follow the D4 road in the direction of Sentein. Arriving in Bordes sur Lez, turn left onto the D17 road in the direction of the "Col de la Core". Drive on to the Bethmale Lake where you can park.

Itinaray detail :

Start from the beautiful Bethmale Lake (1074m altitude), which is a fishing spot. Right after the forest house and the barn, on the right, take the Mount Ner (Black Mountain) well-marked forest track, which will lead you through the woods, beeches and hazel trees for about 7km. At a 1383m altitude (for more hiking some other time), do notice the GR 10 track (marked in red and white) which, on the left, will lead you to the Eliet pass (South-East, 1683m altitude). Now, continue on to the Mount Ner area from where a beautiful view over the Bethmale Valley can be enjoyed. Continue the track for about 20 more minutes. At a 1404m altitude, you will arrive at the "Cirque de Campuls". On the west side, it is dominated by the Pic de Midi de Bordes and on the south side by both the Pic de Mont Garié and the Tuc de la Seube.
The Bethmale Valley is not only famous for its pointed wooden shoes (esclops) made out of beech or birch wood, its cheese and its local costumes, but also for its varied plant species such as rhodondendron, juniper, heather and blueberry. In the south, this gradually rising itinary can take you to the Ayes Lake.
